Gel Nail Tips at Home: How to Choose Your Shape & Apply Like a Pro

  • 5 min read

Salon-length nails without the salon price tag. That's the appeal of nail tips. Whether you're after a dramatic long almond or a clean short square, Gelous Nail Tips give you the length and shape you want, finished with your favourite gel colour. Whether you want something that lasts weeks or something you can change whenever, there's a method for that.

There are two ways to apply them: with gel (using Rubber Base Coat and a lamp) or as a press-on (using Sticky Tabs, no lamp needed). And there are six shapes to choose from. Here's how to figure out what works for you.

Which Nail Tip Shape Is Right for You?

Gelous Nail Tips come in three shapes, each available in short and long. The shape you choose changes the whole look, so it's worth getting right before you buy.

Almond

Almond is our most popular shape, and it's easy to see why. The tapered point with rounded edges elongates the fingers and creates an elegant finish that works for almost any occasion. They look especially good in nudes, pinks, and sheers, and are a popular choice for everyday wear when you want something a little more refined. Available in Short Almond and Long Almond.

Square

Square tips have a clean, flat edge with sharp corners. They're classic and versatile, working well on most nail beds and suiting just about any colour or finish. If you're not sure where to start and almond isn't your thing, square is the safe bet. Available in Short Square and Long Square.

Round

Round tips follow the natural curve of the fingertip, making them the most natural-looking of the three. They're great for shorter lengths and suit an everyday lifestyle. Available in Short Round and Long Round.

Short vs. Long

Short tips sit closer to your natural nail length, easier to manage day-to-day and a good starting point if you're new to nail tips. Long tips make more of a statement and work especially well with almond and square shapes. Not sure which length to go for? Go long. You can always file a long tip down to your preferred length, but you can't add length back.

Gel Nail Tips vs. Press-On Nail Tips: Which Method Suits You?

Both methods use the same nail tips. The difference is in how they're attached and how long they last.

Gel Nail Tips (Rubber Base Coat Method)

The gel method uses Rubber Base Coat to bond the tip to your natural nail, cured under a lamp. The result is a proper gel manicure that lasts 2–3 weeks and grows out naturally, just like a salon set. This is the go-to method if you want longevity and a seamless, polished finish.

You'll need the Rechargeable Nail Tip Lamp for the initial application, plus your regular UV/LED Gel Nail Lamp for curing your colour coats.

Press-On Nail Tips (Sticky Tab Method)

The press-on method uses Sticky Tabs to adhere the tip, with no lamp required. You paint the tips off-nail first using the Nail Tip Stand, then press them on once the colour is cured. For longer wear, you can warm the Sticky Tab with a hair dryer for 5–10 seconds before applying and press it firmly into the nail to maximise adhesion. Easy to remove whenever you're ready, making this the ideal method for events, holidays, or testing a shape before committing to a full gel set.

Which Should You Choose?

Go gel if you want your nails to last 2–3 weeks and grow out naturally. Go press-on if you want something quick, flexible, and easy to remove. Both methods give you the same shapes and the same polished result. The difference is just commitment level.

How to Apply Gel Nail Tips at Home

Here's the quick version. For the full step-by-step, head to the Gelous Nail Tips User Guide or watch the tutorials on YouTube.

  1. Choose your Nail Tips, selecting the closest match from sidewall to sidewall. If between sizes, go larger and file the sides to fit.
  2. Prep and clean your nails by pushing back cuticles, trimming, filing to shape, buffing the entire surface until dull, and wiping clean. Optionally, apply pH Bond and Nail Primer for maximum adhesion.
  3. Apply a thin layer of Rubber Base Coat inside the Tip.
  4. Position the Tip just above the cuticle at a 45° angle, then slowly press it down so the Rubber Base Coat spreads evenly across your natural nail. Flash cure under the Rechargeable Nail Tip Lamp.
  5. Cure all five fingers under your Gel Nail Lamp for 60 seconds.
  6. File to shape and blend the edges, then continue your gel manicure as usual.

How to Apply Press-On Nail Tips at Home

Here's the quick version. For the full step-by-step, head to the Gelous Nail Tips User Guide or watch the tutorials on YouTube.

  1. Choose your Nail Tips, selecting the closest match from sidewall to sidewall. If between sizes, go larger and file the sides to fit.
  2. Prep and clean your nails by pushing back cuticles, trimming, filing to shape, buffing the entire surface until dull, and wiping clean. Optionally, apply pH Bond for maximum adhesion. Skip Nail Primer when using Sticky Tabs.
  3. Paint and cure your Tips off-nail first using the Nail Tip Stand.
  4. Choose the Sticky Tab that best covers your nail bed without overlapping skin or cuticle. Peel and apply, then press down firmly. For longer wear, warm the tab with a hair dryer for 5–10 seconds and rub it into the nail before peeling the backing.
  5. Hold your painted Nail Tip at a 45° angle just above the cuticle, then press it toward the cuticle and along the nail until fully secured.

What to Expect: Longevity, Grow-Out & Removal

Gel nail tips last 2–3 weeks, the same as a regular gel manicure. As your natural nail grows, the tip grows with it. No harsh line, no popping off. If you want to remove them, you file off the colour and soak in acetone, the same process as removing gel polish. An E-File Pen is a faster alternative to filing by hand.

Press-on nail tips with Sticky Tabs are designed to be temporary. Without the hair dryer technique, wear time is typically 1–3 days. With it, you can expect 4–7 days. Removal is simple: soak in warm soapy water and gently lift from the sides.

Tips applied with Sticky Tabs can be reused if removed carefully and kept in good condition.
