The Product

What should I know before using Gelous products?

  • Read our Application & Removal Guide, Gel Nail Lamp User Guide and Frequently Asked Questions carefully before use.
  • Use Gelous Base Coat, Gelous Colour Coat, then Gelous Top Coat, curing each coat with the Gelous UV/LED Gel Nail Lamp.
  • Colours may appear differently on screen than in person.
  • We cannot guarantee polishes or lamps from other brands will work with our products, as they have been designed to work at a complimentary wavelength.
  • Do not use Gel Nail Polish in very sunny areas, or too near to your UV/LED Gel Nail Lamp.
  • Apply sunscreen to your hands 15-30 minutes before your manicure. Avoid getting sunscreen on your nails and wipe off if you do.
  • Avoid touching your skin with Gel Nail Polish — if you do, wipe off immediately before curing.
  • Do not use if you have extremely short nails or if your nails are in poor condition (thin, dry or split).
  • Discontinue use if sensitivity or irritation occurs.
  • Avoid getting back-to-back gel manicures. This break will allow your nails to rehydrate and repair. We recommend a break of at least 1-2 weeks.
  • Do not over-file the nail plate, as it may cause sensitivity.
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets.
  • Do not spill any liquid on the UV/LED Gel Nail Lamp and dry immediately if you do.
  • Unplug the adaptor or turn off at the wall when not in use.
  • Don't look directly at the LED's.
  • Clean the UV/LED Gel Nail Lamp with a damp cloth only.
  • Only use the UV/LED Gel Nail Lamp for preset times.

What makes Gelous Gel Nail Polish different from ordinary nail polish?

Gelous allows you to create DIY, salon quality gel manicures from the comfort of your own home.

Our Gel Nail Polish paints on like an ordinary nail polish, but lasts up to two weeks without fading, peeling or chipping. You don’t have to worry about waiting for your nails to dry or smudging them afterwards — they are hard and perfectly dry once cured with the Gelous UV/LED Gel Nail Lamp. Stacked up against a regular manicure, a Gelous manicure lasts longer, feels stronger, and shines like no-one’s business.

How does Gel Nail Polish work?

Gel Nail Polish contains ingredients that react with the UV rays emitted by the Gel Nail Lamp in a process called "curing". In 60 seconds, the once liquid gel turns into a hard coating. Your Gelous Base Coat and Gelous Colour Coat layers will remain slightly tacky after curing so that when you apply the following layer, it sticks to the layer below. Unlike the Base Coat and Colour Coat, your Top Coat layer should be hard, dried and perfectly cured once you have placed your nails under the Gel Nail Lamp for 60 seconds.

As long as you are applying your Gel Nail Polish in thin, even layers and curing each coat for 60 seconds under our UV/LED Gel Nail Lamp, your Base Coat and Colour Coat will be cured.

How long will my Gelous manicure or pedicure last for?

When applied following our Application Instructions your manicure or pedicure should last at least two weeks. If you are finding your Gel Nail Polish is not lasting as long as expected, please have a read of the first question here

Will Gel Nail Polish ruin my nails?

Gel Nail Polish itself will not hurt your nails if you apply and remove the it correctly. Please make sure to follow the instructions in our Application & Removal Guide. Avoid picking at your Gel Nail Polish, as you will inevitably peel away part of your natural nail, leaving it thin and weak.

Do I need to purchase all of your Products? The Gelous Base Coat, Colour Coat, Top Coat and UV/LED Gel Nail Lamp?

Yes, all four products are required to create a long-lasting gel manicure. Use Gelous Base Coat, Gelous Colour Coat, then Gelous Top Coat, curing each coat with the Gelous UV/LED Gel Nail Lamp. If you skip the Base Coat or Top Coat, or try to dry without the Gel Nail Lamp your manicure or pedicure will not be effective and could even cause serious damage to your hands or nails.

Our Gel Nail Polish and UV/LED Nail Lamp are designed to be totally compatible, with our UV/LED Lamp curing our Gel Nail Polish within a specific wavelength. Though we use a reasonably generic curing wavelength, we do advise against using different polishes with our lamps, or different lamps with our polish as they may not be compatible.

Are your UV/LED Gel Nail Lamps safe to use?

All Gel Nail Lamps predominantly emit Ultraviolet-A (UVA) regardless of whether they are a UV/LED, LED lamp or an UV lamp. The LED bulbs used in our Gel Nail Lamps are much safer than UV bulbs, last up to 50,000 hours and only take 60 seconds to cure each coat of your Gelous Gel Nail Polish!

Sunburn or skin damage will only occur if you are exposed to your Gel Nail Lamp for over approximately 75 minutes at a time. When using for the recommended times of up to 5 x 60 seconds, your exposure is well below this! Dr. Stern (New York City MD, dermatologist and nail specialist) stated in a Marie Claire article “A study quantified the skin cancer risk of these devices and determined that even if you were to have a gel manicure every week, your chances of developing skin cancer would not be increased."

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) views “nail curing lamps as low risk when used as directed by the label.” A 2013 published study indicated that “even for the worst case lamp that was evaluated, 30 minutes of daily exposure to this lamp was below the occupational exposure limits for UV radiation. (Note that these limits only apply to normal, healthy people and not to people who may have a condition that makes them extra sensitive to UV radiation.)”

Still don't like to take the chance? Neither do we! We recommend putting sunblock on 15-30 minutes before using to protect your skin - just as we recommend this before you go out for a walk!

What other safety precautions should you be taking when using a Gel Nail Lamp?

Before your gel manicure or pedicure, make sure to check whether medications you are taking can react poorly in UV light. An article from Brydie states, “Dr. Stern points out that one common culprit is Doxycycline (used for the treatment of acne and infections). If you’re taking other medications and are unsure of their side effects, Dr. Stern says to consult your doctor to determine risks of photosensitivity or phototoxicity before placing your hands under a UV (or LED) light.”

Only use compatible Gel Nail Polish and Gel Nail Lamps.

Other ways to keep your nails and hands healthy and safe before, during, and after gel manicures:

  • Apply Cuticle Oil and a Hydrating Hand Cream regularly to keep your hands nourished.
  • Dispose of Gelous Orangewood Cuticle Sticks after use. These cannot be disinfected, so it is unhygienic to use them multiple times.
  • Replace your Gelous Nail File approximately every three months if you’re a regular user. Keeping it any longer can lead to nail damage (as the buffing plates wear down) and a build-up of bacteria.
  • Carefully read our Application & Removal Guide before use.
  • Remove your Gel Nail Polish according to our Application & Removal Guide. Avoid picking at your Gel Nail Polish, as you will inevitably peel away part of your natural nail, leaving it thin and weak.
  • Avoid getting back-to-back gel manicures. This break will allow your nails to rehydrate and repair. We recommend a break of at least 1-2 weeks.
  • Be careful to not over-file the nail plate, as it may cause sensitivity.
  • Avoid touching your skin with Gel Nail Polish and if you do, make sure to wipe off immediately before curing. Curing Gel Nail Polish on your skin can cause mild to serious irritation.
  • Do not use if you have extremely short nails or if your nails are in poor condition (thin, dry or split). We recommend using Cuticle Oil, ORLY Hydrating Creme and ORLY Nail Defence until your nails are in a better condition for a gel manicure.

Can I use Gel Nail Polish if I am pregnant?

While the ingredients in our Gel Nail Polish are safe for pregnant women, all polish can cause reactions if you get it on your skin. As skin is more sensitive during pregnancy, you may be more likely to develop a reaction if you get it on your skin. You should also make sure to use new or sterilised nail tools to avoid this.

The Nail Polish Remover used in the removal process of Gel Nail Polish can also affect a pregnant women’s nail strength more than someone who isn’t pregnant, as pregnancy makes your nails more brittle. You should use high quality Nail Polish Remover for as little time as possible. 10 minutes into the removal process, you should start checking if your Gel Nail Polish is ready to be easily removed.

What a pregnant women chooses to use during her pregnancy is such a personal decision, and totally up to the mama-to-be. If you do choose to use our products while pregnant, please make sure to always perform your gel manicure application and removal in a well ventilated area and use sunblock on the skin surrounding the nails.

Can I use Gel Nail Polish on my child?

We generally advise against this for the following reasons. Children’s nails tend to be thin and flimsy, which provides a poor foundation for Gel Nail Polish. This, plus the active lifestyles of children means you can expect the Gel Nail Polish to chip and lift prematurely. A child may naturally pick and tear at the loose edges of their Gel Nail Polish (rather than removing according to our Removal Instructions), meaning they could damage an already thin nail plate. Additionally, because younger skin is much more sensitive than older skin, extreme caution needs to be taken to avoid getting any Gel Nail Polish on the skin in case of allergic reactions.

Can I use other lamps or other polish with Gelous products?

Our Gel Nail Polish and UV/LED Nail Lamp are totally compatible, with the UV/LED Lamp operating at 365-405nm and our Gel Nail Polish curing within this wavelength. We advise against using different polishes with our lamps, or different lamps with our polish as they may not be compatible. However if your polish cures within the same wavelength it is likely to work.

What type of Gel Nail Lamps do Gelous sell?

Our lamps are UV/LED. They use LED bulbs that work on a narrow bandwidth of the UV spectrum, between 365-405nm. The LED bulbs, are much safer than UV bulbs, last longer and take less time to dry your nails, so are much more effective!

What is the Gelous Gel Nail Polish shelf life?

What is the difference between LED Gel Nail Lamps, UV Gel Nail Lamps and UV/LED Gel Nail Lamps?

All Gel Nail Lamps emit UV light regardless of whether they are a UV/LED, LED lamp or an UV lamp. This is how a Gel Polish cures! Older, “traditional” Gel Nail Lamps used UV bulbs, which needed changing regularly and took far too long to cure Gel Nail Polish. Most modern Gel Nail Lamps, including the Gelous UV/LED Gel Nail Lamps use LED bulbs operating on the UV spectrum. The LED bulbs used in our Gel Nail Lamps are much safer than UV bulbs, last up to 50,000 hours and only take 60 seconds to cure each coat of your Gelous Gel Nail Polish!

LED Gel Nail Lamps, LED UV Gel Nail Lamps, UV/LED Gel Nail Lamps and whatever other variations are on the market all emit UV rays and use LED bulb technology.

Why don’t all brands market their lamps as UV/LED Lamps?

Many brands like to remove the “UV” word from their Gel Nail Lamp name due to bad connotations. We market our lamps as UV/LED Gel Nail Lamps simply because we want our customers to fully understand what products they are purchasing off us and how they work.

Company Ethics

Are Gelous products cruelty free, vegan, non-toxic and 10 free?

Our Gel Nail Polish is cruelty free, vegan, non-toxic and 10 free, which means it does not use Toluene, DBP, Camphor, Formaldehyde, Formaldehyde Resin, Xylene, Parabens, Fragrances, Phthalates, animal testing and animal-derived ingredients.

Are Gelous products produced ethically?

Our commitment to having a direct relationship with our suppliers means that we can confidently say our products are produced free from child labour by workers paid a fair wage, well above minimum wage in a clean and comfortable working environment.

How is Gelous reducing their environmental impact?

We are constantly making efforts to reduce our impact on the environment throughout our company by using sustainable alternatives and following correct reycling practices.

The packing slips within our orders are made from FSC certified paper produced from responsible sources.

Smaller orders are packaged using WrapPak die-cut kraft paper inside a R3pack compostable courier satchel. R3pack's range of compostable satchels are made with corn starch, PLA and PBAT and non toxic inks. These satchels certified to comply with the International Standards for home and commercial composting. The backing of the courier labels and satchel tabs are both recycled.

Larger orders are packaged inside cardboard boxes and protected with thick paper void fill which is a more sustainable alternative to traditional void fills.

Product Issues

How can I get my gel manicure to last longer?

If you are a new user of Gel Nail Polish, please don’t be disheartened if your first few manicures don’t last as long as expected. There are many tips and tricks to applying Gel Nail Polish that make the difference between a long-lasting application and an application that doesn’t last long enough (i.e. chips easily or peels). Often, new users of Gel Nail Polish make small mistakes during the application process that cause premature chipping or peeling. Once you master your gel polish application you will get no peeling and may get minor chipping at the end of your manicures life. Practice really does make perfect!

Please be patient, read our Application & Removal Guide carefully, and take note of our tip and tricks. Once you get used to the application process, you will be able to enjoy shiny, long-lasting and chip-free manicures.

Here are our tips for flawless application:

  • Read our Application & Removal Guide carefully before applying your polish.
  • Make sure your nails are strong enough for a gel manicure. If your nails are too weak, they can bend and cause the polish to pull away from the nail. Apply our Cuticle Oil and/or ORLY Nail Defense for at least a week if your nails are weak to improve your nail strength.
  • Nail prep is supremely important and will directly influence the longevity of your mani or pedi. Before applying your polish, gently buff the entire surface of each nail. Make sure to buff in one direction and remember, you are trying to rough up your nails, not make them smooth, so the whole nail should appear dull (not shiny) from the buffing. You need to be very thorough with the buffing, paying particular attention to the sides of the nails and around the cuticle, as this is where lifting may occur prematurely if they are not buffed correctly.
  • Make sure to clean the nails thoroughly after buffing. Any buffing dust, oil, etc will reduce adhesion of the gel and affect the longevity. Apply nail polish remover, isopropyl alcohol or rubbing alcohol to a Lint Free Wipe and thoroughly clean the nails, under the nails and around the cuticles.
  • Don’t apply your coats of polish too thick and make sure they are an even thickness. Pay attention to the cuticles and the sides, as this is where polish can get thicker if you have too much polish on the brush. Thinner is better to ensure proper curing and reduce the likelihood of peeling or chipping. To remove extra polish from the brush, circle the inside neck of the bottle and press the excess Gel Nail Polish off the stem of the brush.
  • One of the benefits of Gel Nail Polish is that it doesn’t dry like normal nail polish, so you can make sure your manicure is perfect before you use the UV/LED lamp to set it! Be sure to take your time, and simply wipe off the layer with Nail Polish Remover if you aren’t happy.
  • When applying, start in the middle of the nail then ‘push’ polish gently towards the cuticle without it touching. Then pull one stroke up the centre, one up each side and finally ‘cap’ the nail by running the brush horizontally over the top (this stops lifting / peeling / chipping at the top and the cuticle). The capping is very important! View capping diagram here.
  • It is important to leave a thin gap between the edge of the polish and your cuticle. If the polish is applied to the cuticle, as your nail plate grows, eventually the polish will separate from the skin, causing the polish to lift. Aim to avoid getting any polish on your skin or cuticle, however if you do, remove it with an Orangewood Cuticle Stick or Lint Free Pad before curing.
  • Avoid washing dishes or using cleaning products without gloves, as this can interfere with the polish.
Dig out those rubber gloves!
  • Use Cuticle Oil regularly to help your nails look fresh for longer and keep the area moisturised. If you get a snag, file your gels down.

What can I do if my Gel Nail Polish is peeling, lifting or chipping prematurely?

Check out the 'How can I get my gel manicure to last longer' answer above for some tips on avoiding peeling, lifting and premature chipping.

No peeling, lifting or premature chipping should ever occur if your manicure is done correctly unless your nails are very weak, you use cleaning products without gloves, or have your hands in water an excessive amount. You may get some chipping towards the end of your manicure.

Should my Base Coat or Colour Coat be sticky?

Your Base Coat and Colour Coat should remain a little sticky after curing, so that when you apply the following layer it sticks to the layer below. As long as you are applying your polish in thin, even layers and curing for 60 seconds, your Base Coat and Colour Coat will be cured. Unlike the Base Coat and Colour Coat, your Top Coat layer should be hard, dried and perfectly cured once you have placed your nails under the UV / LED Gel Nail Lamp for 60 seconds.

Is the blue film on the UV/LED Gel Nail Lamp removable?

Yes, this is just a protective cover and is fully removable.

Why do my nails sometimes feel hot when I use my UV/LED Gel Nail Lamp?

It is perfectly normal for some warmth to be felt during the curing process, as this in indicative of the Gel Nail Polish turning from liquid form to solid form. Our Gel Nail Lamp’s have a low heat mode, specifically for sensitive hands. To use the low heat mode, press the ON / OFF button to switch the power from 48W to the 24W low-heat mode. You can then use for 0-99 seconds.

We advise checking that your product is being applied according to our instructions. Please make sure:

  • The product is applied in thin coats and is not on your skin
  • You are using all Gelous brand products.
  • The nail plate is not damaged (from buffing too much, using chemicals without gloves, removing Gel Nail Polish incorrectly, not having a break between manicures, etc).
  • Your nails are in good condition. If they are not, make sure you use Cuticle OilORLY Hydrating Creme and ORLY Nail Defence until your nails are in a better condition for a gel manicure.

What do I do if my Gel Nail Polish brush has hardened?

This can happen because your Gel Nail Polish was stored incorrectly, not closed properly or used too close to natural or artificial UV rays.

  • Give the brush a gentle clean with rubbing alcohol or isopropyl alcohol. Make sure to throughly rinse the brush with warm water, then dry with a Lint Free Wipe before putting it back in the bottle. Do not use acetone to clean the brush, because this can melt the brush.
  • To avoid this in future, please make sure to follow our storage instructions

What do I do if my Gel Nail Polish has a thick consistency?

Gel Nail Polish is naturally a little thicker than regular polish, particularly glitter polish.

  • To make your polish easier to manage, you can try turning the closed bottle upside down and rolling it between your hands, rather than shaking. The heat from your hands will help to warm and thin out the polish.
  • When applying your Gel Nail Polish, you can also try wiping the brush against the neck of the bottle to remove excess polish.
  • If this doesn't help, you can try running your closed gel polish bottle under hot water to heat up the polish. After a minute or two under the hot water, roll the bottle between your hands. Be careful because the bottle can get very hot. Repeat this process until your polish is a good consistency.
  • Additionally, please make sure to follow our storage instructions.

Usage

How can I fix a chipped nail?

If you have a chip, but don't want to redo your whole manicure, you can:

  • Buff off the shiny Top Coat completely.
  • Wipe the buffing dust with a moistened Lint Free Wipe.
  • Apply a layer of your Colour Coat, curing as per your regular application instructions
  • Apply a layer of your Top Coat, curing as per your regular application instructions.

How do I apply and remove Gelous Gel Nail Polish?

You can read how to apply and remove your Gelous Gel Nail Polish here

When should I not give myself a gel manicure?

You should avoid gel manicures if you have extremely short nails or if your nails are in poor condition (thin, dry or split). You can try strengthening and growing your nails in the meantime by using our Cuticle Oil over the nail and nail bed and/or Orly Nail Defense.

You should discontinue use if sensitivity or irritation occurs. This may have occurred due to:

  • Your nails being in poor condition.
  • Gel Nail Polish getting on your skin.
  • Under-curing due to thick layers of Gel Nail Polish
  • Under-curing due to not curing for the full 60 seconds
  • An allergy to the ingredients

How often can I give myself a gel manicure?

Avoid getting back-to-back gel manicures. We recommend a break of at least 1-2 weeks, which will allow your nails to rehydrate and repair.

How do I use the Gelous UV/LED Gel Nail Lamp?

You can read how to use the Gelous UV/LED Gel Nail Lamp here.

How do I apply and remove Gelous Gel Nail Transfers?

You can read how to apply and remove the Gelous Nail Transfers here

Should I shake the bottle of Gel Nail Polish before I use it?

No, you should turn the bottle upside down and roll between your hands, rather than shaking. The heat from your hands will help to warm and thin out the Gel Nail Polish.

Storage

How should I store my Gel Nail Polish?

  • Gel Nail Polish bottles should be stored in a cool, climate-controlled area away from exposure to natural sunlight. Don't leave them sitting out in front of a window or in a bright room that gets a lot of light. Ideally they should be stored somewhere dark like in a closet, box or drawer. Gel Nail Polish should not be stored in your bathroom, as it’s constantly heating up and cooling down because of your blow dryer and shower. Our bottles are black to stop sunlight from affecting them as much, however you should still store your bottles away from sunlight.
  • Store your Gel Nail Polish right side up to prevent it from drying out. Don’t store it upside down, as this can cause clumps and drying at the neck of the bottle.
  • After use keep the neck and rim of your Gel Nail Polish bottle clean by wiping it with a Lint Free Wipe. This will allow your bottle to close properly and prevent air from getting inside.
  • Make sure your Gel Nail Polish lids are always screwed on tightly to keep them airtight. We recommend closing the lid tightly after each coat.
  • Avoid using your Gel Nail Polish in very sunny areas, or too near to your UV/LED Gel Nail Lamp when it is turned on. This prevents your polish from undertaking any part of the curing process.

How long will my Gel Nail Polish keep for?

Our Gel Nail Polish can last from 18 to 24 months if it is stored correctly. See storage recommendations above.

Why doesn't my tracking number work?

A tracking link is sent to you when your order is processed, however tracking details won’t display until your order is picked up by our courier. You will be able to see tracking details once it is collected.

Why is my order taking a long time to arrive?

Please remember that once the packages have left Gelous, all control over delivery times is held with couriers and we do not accept any liability for costs associated with delivery delays.

Keeping track of the package and following up with the courier company regarding delays or redeliveries are in the hands of the customer. Unfortunately we get a lot of orders and do not have the time to check up on the courier companies delivery of each and every package.

If you have a problem with your item arriving, but you can see the tracking details as being active, we recommend you contact Aramex (New Zealand orders), or DHL (Australian orders) with the tracking number you have been sent. They work independently from us, so we can not control their service (even though we would like to)! However if your parcel does not arrive, or you are told it is missing or damaged, please send us an email at info@gelous.co with your order number.

Can I place an order without creating an account?
